Melissa Marrero is a stay-at-home mom in Tennessee. In 2006, her husband Emmanuel was serving in the U.S. Army, stationed in Iraq.
Melissa was doing everything she could to keep the household running while her husband was away. Then, one day, she received a notice from the IRS for back taxes. Melissa knew that couldn't be - active duty soldiers are exempt. She did some investigating and discovered that Emmanuel's identity had been stolen. But knowing that an identity theft has happened and having a plan to fix it are two very different things. Melissa quickly became frustrated by a lack of responsiveness from law enforcement. To add to her stress, she received word from Iraq that Emmanuel had been injured by an IED, and was in the hospital. Melissa did not want to make her husband's condition worse by telling him the news about the identity theft. She was at her wit's end.
Melissa told her story to a local news reporter, and word made it to idCURE's Denver headquarters. We stepped in, and our ID Experts Recovery Advocate D.J. took the case. She found that an illegal immigrant in California had purchased Private Marrero's identity on the black market. He had then used Marrero's Social Security Number to gain employment, secure a lease on an apartment, and get a cell phone.
There wasn't the shopping spree many of us expect with an identity theft - this individual just used the identity to hide his illegal status - meaning that the theft presisted for several years until the failure to pay taxes raised the issue. After identifying the cause of the theft, D.J. successfully restored Emmanuel Marrero's identity to pre-event status. She even assisted law enforcement in bringing the identity thief to justice.
Today, Emmanuel Marrero is healthy, deployed out of Iraq, and the Marreros are able to move forward with their lives without the fear of identity theft. Their case is unfortunately all-too-common, servicemen and women are often targets of identity theft because they are unable to keep a close eye on their records while stationed overseas, and individuals with common Hispanic last names are likely to be targeted by the same type of black-market identity auctions that claimed Private Marrero's records. Because this case crossed state lines and had no fraudulent purchases associated with it, only a dedicated recovery service like idCURE could fully solve the case.
